Can Clean Homes Still Attract Roaches?

Cockroaches are resourceful creatures that can find the food, water, and shelter they need, even in a spotless home. For example, small crumbs under appliances, drops of water in your sink, or even cardboard boxes can inadvertently provide sustenance and a place to hide. Their resilience and ability to get by with minimal resources make them challenging guests to completely deter with cleanliness alone.

However, maintaining a clean home is an excellent first step in managing roach activity. Regularly vacuuming, sealing food in airtight containers, fixing leaky pipes, and decluttering can help make your home less appealing to these pests. Additionally, blocking off common entry points like cracks and gaps in windows or doors can limit their access. Despite your efforts, if roaches find their way in, it’s not a reflection of poor hygiene – it’s often due to external factors like warm weather, nearby infestations, or moisture problems. Burge Pest Control can provide the extra layer of protection needed to keep roaches out of your home.

Areas We Serve

Burge Pest Control is proud to serve Alameda, California and other surrounding areas.

Types of Cockroaches You May Encounter

With our area’s warm, humid climate, the Bay Area is home to a few different types of cockroaches, each with their own distinct characteristics and habits. Understanding these varieties can help you identify the specific pest in your home and take appropriate action.

Our region is home to:

  • American cockroaches. This large cockroach is reddish-brown in color with a yellowish figure-eight pattern on its head. It is one of the most commonly found species indoors. American cockroaches prefer damp areas such as basements, kitchens, or bathrooms but can also be found outside in leaf litter and sewers.
  • German cockroaches. Light brown with two distinct dark stripes running down their backs, German cockroaches are smaller but highly prolific. They are usually found near food sources and prefer warm, moist areas like kitchens and bathrooms.
  • Oriental cockroaches. Also known as water bugs, Oriental cockroaches are shiny and dark brown or black. They are slower-moving and typically found near damp, cool areas like drains, basements, and crawl spaces.

By recognizing the species, you can better understand their behavior and habitats, which is the first step to addressing a potential infestation. Taking preventative measures and seeking professional help when needed will help keep these unwelcome guests under control.
